EARTH STEWARDS

Overnight Camp for 12-16 Year Olds

The Earth Stewards camp is for teens ages 12-16 who are ready to roll up their sleeves and dive into the real-life workings of a vibrant, organic farm. As “junior apprentices,” campers get the chance to learn directly from experts—whether it's working alongside farmers, cheesemakers, bakers, or chefs—and contribute to the daily rhythms of Hawthorne Valley. They’ll spend their mornings learning hands-on skills in various workstations across the farm, gaining valuable knowledge in sustainable farming and food production.

After a busy morning of farm life, Earth Stewards enjoy well-balanced afternoons of relaxation and adventure. They’ll have time to hang out with friends in the cabins, explore the surrounding woods, learn a new skill like whittling or fire building, and cool off with a swim in our pond. This program offers a refreshing break from the distractions of the digital world, allowing teens to connect with nature, unwind, and focus on the present moment.

Living in rustic cabins nestled in a peaceful wooded glen, campers experience camp life in a way that fosters independence and community. Counselors stay in nearby yurts and cabins, providing guidance and support. Meals are shared family-style in our Dining Hall, featuring fresh, mostly vegetarian dishes made from scratch using organic and Biodynamic ingredients. It's a chance to unplug, build new skills, and forge lasting friendships—all while making a real impact on the farm.

By the end of their stay, campers will leave with practical skills, a renewed connection to the environment, and a deeper sense of self. Whether they’re learning to bake bread, tending to the livestock, or assisting the farmers with a bountiful harvest, Earth Stewards will gain valuable life experience, build confidence, and feel empowered to make a difference.

6-DAY earth stewards camp

Sessions 1 + 3: Ages 12-14

The Earth Stewards 6-day session offers teens ages 12-14 the chance to step into the boots of a “junior apprentice” at Hawthorne Valley Farm. Whether it’s their first time at camp or a return visit, campers will dive into the world of sustainable agriculture through hands-on experience in the farm's many operations, including the creamery, bakery, deli, gardens, and livestock areas. This is a chance for campers to gain real-life skills, contribute to a working farm, and make a tangible impact on the world around them.

Campers spend their mornings learning how to make cheese, bake bread, care for animals, and work in the fields, rotating through different workstations across the farm. In the afternoons, the fun continues with swimming in the pond, crafting, and learning outdoor skills. Evenings are spent together playing camp games like capture the flag, followed by stories and songs around the campfire. By the end of the week, campers will have learned new skills, formed lasting friendships, and discovered a deeper connection to nature and the food system.

13-Day earth stewards Camp

Sessions 2 + 4: Ages 13-16

For teens interested in farming, sustainability, and food production, a 13-day Earth Stewards session is the ultimate hands-on experience.

In addition to the workstations and afternoon activities offered during a 6-day session, this longer session allows campers to spend more time developing their farming, cooking, and leadership skills. 13-day Earth Stewards campers experience unique activities and outings, such as hiking in the Catskills, learning how to use a map & compass, berry picking at a local farm, and more. Plus a memorable campout under the stars, complete with a bonfire and s’mores.

The 13-day Earth Stewards session offers campers the chance to build confidence, independence, and a deep connection to both nature and themselves. It’s the perfect blend of hands-on learning, outdoor adventure, and community-building, all while discovering the impact they can have on the world through sustainable living.
